What matters most when packaging dried fruit?
Dried fruit packaging must be specified from water activity, stickiness, sugar or powder at the seal, oxygen and light sensitivity, piece geometry and the intended shelf life. “Dried” does not mean every fruit needs the same barrier. Compare material candidates and validate the finished pouch using the actual fruit and filling process.
Failure-mode map
Define the product risk before selecting a pouch.
Moisture gain or loss
Texture can harden, soften or become sticky depending on the product and storage environment.
Sugar and product contamination
Coatings or small fragments can collect in the zipper and final seal.
Oxygen and color
Some products may be sensitive to oxidation or visible color change.
Product edges and settling
Dense or irregular pieces affect pouch volume, window position and seal clearance.
Format logic
Match format to filling, shelf and use.
| Project condition | Format direction |
|---|---|
| Soft or sticky pieces | Use adequate opening width and protect the seal zone during filling. |
| Lightweight slices | Allow volume and settling headspace; do not size from net weight alone. |
| Retail window project | Review what remains visible after settling and what clear area does to the barrier direction. |
Material direction
Compare candidate structures without turning them into promises.
Use supplier reports to compare the exact proposed material under stated conditions. Windows, zippers, seals, folds and conversion still require separate finished-pouch review.
| Candidate direction | When to evaluate it | Evidence still required |
|---|---|---|
| Clear laminate direction | Candidate when product visibility and color inspection support the buying decision. | Moisture/oxygen need, light exposure, window placement and seals. |
| Metalized barrier direction | Candidate when opacity and added barrier are part of the project. | Product compatibility, exact test data, flexing and seal performance. |
| Kraft-look construction | A surface and merchandising direction, not proof of sustainability. | Exact layers, print behavior, window construction and disposal claims. |
Filling and sealing
Protect the closure and final top seal.
Fill weight is not pouch volume. Record bulk density, settled pack shape, functional headspace, opening width and the intended sealing process before final dimensions are approved.
- Define whether fruit is sticky, sugar-coated, powdered or free flowing.
- Verify hopper, scoop or manual filling clearance and keep the zipper track clean.
- Review seal temperature, dwell and pressure on the selected sealant and line.
- Store filled samples under the planned conditions and inspect texture, color, seals and pack shape.

| Pack | Fill weight, settled volume, headspace, opening and window direction |
| Market | Retail/ecommerce route, destination, storage and label requirements |
| Artwork | Front hierarchy, barcode, window and gusset content |
| Evidence | Material results, filled-pack seal/leak checks and shelf-life plan |
Dried Fruit packaging questions
Is clear packaging suitable for dried fruit?
It may be, if the product and shelf-life plan tolerate the resulting light and barrier conditions. Validate the actual clear construction.
Can dried fruit and candy use one specification?
Not automatically. Water activity, stickiness, oils, acidity, shape and storage conditions can lead to different material and sealing directions.
Why does dried fruit collect near the seal?
Piece geometry, static, product flow and fill level can move fragments into the zipper or top-seal zone. The filling method must be reviewed.
Does resealing restore the original barrier?
No. Reclosure reduces open exposure but does not recreate the unopened permanent seal or remove air introduced during use.
What size should I start with?
Use measured product volume at the target weight, then add process and closure clearance before a filled-pouch trial.
