01
Read a laminate from outside to inside
A sequence such as PET / VMPET / PE describes a review direction: the outside web supports print and handling, the middle layer may add an opaque barrier function, and the inside sealant forms the product-contact and heat-seal surface. The exact film grades, thicknesses, coatings, ink, adhesive and curing conditions still belong in the controlled project specification.

- Barrier or support layer
- Inside sealant and product-contact surface
- Adhesive, coating and conversion details
02
Start with the product failure risks
Do not choose a laminate from appearance alone. Define oxygen, moisture, light, aroma, grease, acidity, puncture, filling temperature and handling risks, then decide which properties need measured limits. OTR and WVTR results must stay attached to the method, conditions, specimen and units.
- Product form and composition
- Target shelf life and storage conditions
- Filling, sealing and distribution process
- Agreed tests and acceptance criteria
03
Keep appearance, features and compliance separate
Matte, kraft-look, metalized and clear describe visible directions; zipper, valve and window describe features. Neither group proves regulatory suitability. For a food-contact project, review every relevant component and its authorization for the intended food type, temperature and conditions of use in the destination market.
- Appearance and print direction
- Window, zipper, valve and notch position
- Food-contact component evidence
- Destination-market and use-condition review
04
Approve the finished structure, not an abbreviation
Record the full outside-to-inside layer sequence, grades or supplier references where available, total and layer thicknesses, feature positions, test results, sample identity and revision. Recheck affected evidence when the product, laminate, pouch dimensions, feature, filling process or market changes.
- Controlled structure and revision
- Method, conditions, result and units
- Converted-pouch and filled-pack checks
- Buyer and supplier approval record
Field map
Compare candidate layer directions and required evidence.
These are candidate review directions already used across the StandPouchy catalog. They are not fixed recipes or performance claims. The evidence column is what prevents a layer abbreviation from being mistaken for an approved specification.
| Structure direction | Layer roles | What it can help review | Evidence still needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| PET / PE | Printable outside web / inside heat-sealant | Clear display and a simple two-layer construction direction | Exact grades and thicknesses; OTR/WVTR if relevant; seal and filled-pack results |
| PET / EVOH-PE | Printable clear web / coextruded oxygen-barrier and sealant direction | Transparency where oxygen protection is part of the brief | EVOH construction; test humidity and temperature; OTR; seal and compatibility evidence |
| PET / VMPET / PE | Printable web / vacuum-metalized barrier layer / sealant | Opaque direction for oxygen, moisture, aroma and light-sensitive dry-product review | Metalized-film grade; OTR/WVTR conditions; flex, seal and filled-pack evidence |
| Matte PET / VMPET / PE | Matte outside web / metalized barrier layer / sealant | Low-glare appearance with the same three functional layer positions | Matte treatment; scuff review; transmission, seal and filled-pack evidence |
| PET / AL / PE | Printable web / aluminum-foil direction / sealant | Opaque foil-barrier direction where transparency is not required | Foil gauge and laminate build; flex or pinhole review; seal and finished-pack evidence |
| Kraft / PET / PE | Paper-look outside / supporting film / sealant | Kraft appearance where barrier needs are established separately | Paper and film grades; print and bond review; OTR/WVTR if relevant; seal evidence |
| Kraft / PET / VMPET / PE | Paper-look outside / support web / metalized barrier / sealant | Kraft appearance with an added opaque barrier-layer direction | Complete layer build; bond, transmission, seal and filled-pack evidence |
| Kraft / PET / PE + window | Paper-look construction / registered clear display area / sealant | Product visibility with a deliberately localized clear area | Window geometry and materials; whole-pack barrier impact; registration, seal and display review |
Method references
Verify the controlled method before testing.
ASTM states that OTR is not the sole determinant of package performance and that purchaser and seller must agree on sampling, conditions and acceptance criteria. FDA ties food-contact status to the individual component, manufacturer and intended conditions of use. Confirm the current controlled references for the destination market before approval.
